I saw the trailer for the movie “Whip It” and it got me interested in Roller Derby. I know it’s a contact sport with blockers and jammers, but how do you actually win the derby?

Each team has five players on the track at a time. One from each team is the jammer. She scores the points. She tries to get through the pack the first time to get lead jammer status, which allows her to stop the play whenever she wants. The second time through she gets a point for everyone she passes on the other team.
Games in roller derby are called “bouts”. The jammers – the point-scoring skaters – get a point for each opposing player they pass legally.
Roller derby is having a huge resurgance right now. The Wikipedia article is pretty extensive. ^_-
