Speak asked:

I was thinking of trying out for my local roller derby. I’ve never actually been able to play it, so what should I expect? Will they want me to be an expert first, or will they be willing the help me figure out the tricks?

Everyone starts from somewhere and you have to learn from somewhere. I’m going through 8 weeks of training right now and I’m going on the 4th week this Sunday. They will teach you everything you need to know about how to play. Some newbies don’t know how to hardly skate when they come to training! Good luck!

First of all, you should expect to have a good time! Roller derby leagues are always looking for “fresh meat” and are very willing to teach you everything you need to know. Some women begin without knowing how to skate at all. I started training for roller derby a couple of months ago and I hadn’t put on skates in 13 years before that! It’s always a good idea to get familiar with the game. Read the rules online and watch some bouts in person or on you tube. Just keep a good attitude and get quality safety gear and you’ll be fine. Have fun!!
